I will always think of it as the 'peoples station'. It really and truely is. I have never experienced an audience quite like it - Breeze listeners are blue blood Kiwis who really care and are involved in their favourite radio station like no other. They just adore it. Loyal, lovely people fond of their music and their lifestyle and always happy to tell you so.
From modest beginnings with no listeners at all then building an audience over nearly five years, first in Auckland then nationwide - its sure been a lovely time. I feel very lucky to have had such a wonderful, heart felt show with so many gorgeous listeners who've really opened their hearts to me, and more importantly love.
Love Songs really do evoke so many memories of special times, places or people we hold close. I know thats why this show has been so special to me, and to all who have phoned in and taken part in the show. And that's never been more evident than when going through some of the heart wrenching tough times we've experienced in the last six months in this country. I will never forget the nights during the Pike River and Christchurch earthquake tragedies. I feel very fortunate to have had this wonderful, real, emotive and beautiful show with so many people showing kindness and love to others.
I will miss the Breeze and my friends and colleagues there. It is a really special radio station for a reason. The people who work there are brilliant professionals and are all very good at their jobs - they (Kris, Holly, Braydon, Shinead, Fuscia) make it so easy for the rest of us on air. We are pretty much the end result of many others behind us doing all the hard work. I will always have the highest respect for The Robbies and Carly, the lovely, solid and sound Mark Leishman and my dear friend and mentor Kerry Smith who took me under her wing many years ago when I was new in radio. I wish her all the best and care very deeply for what she is going through at this time. Much love also to my friends and colleagues in Christchurch who have had a cruel and challenging journey that is still going. It must be so hard to deliver great radio every day, especially to so many who's lives have been affected so greatly. Thanks also to the rest of the Breeze teams throughout the country.
And the final word to my brilliant, classy boss Ian Avery who gave me the chance five years ago to have what every working mother dreams of - the chance to be a full time Mum, yet to have a rewarding wonderful career as well. I have been so very lucky Avo and will always be grateful for that.
Goodbye Nicki - you will be sadly missed. What a wonderful radio presenter you are x
