Bye Bye Breeze

It's with much love in my heart that I say good bye to Lovesongs on the Breeze.

I will always think of it as the 'peoples station'.  It really and truely is.  I have never experienced an audience quite like it - Breeze listeners are blue blood Kiwis who really care and are involved in their favourite radio station like no other.  They just adore it.  Loyal, lovely people fond of their music and their lifestyle and always happy to tell you so.

From modest beginnings with no listeners at all then building an audience over nearly five years, first in Auckland then nationwide - its sure been a lovely time.  I feel very lucky to have had such a wonderful, heart felt show with so many gorgeous listeners who've really opened their hearts to me, and more importantly love.

Love Songs really do evoke so many memories of special times, places or people we hold close.  I know thats why this show has been so special to me, and to all who have phoned in and taken part in the show.   And that's never been more evident than when going through some of the heart wrenching tough times we've experienced in the last six months in this country.  I will never forget the nights during the Pike River and Christchurch earthquake tragedies.  I feel very fortunate to have had this wonderful, real, emotive and beautiful show with so many people showing kindness and love to others.

I will miss the Breeze and my friends and colleagues there.  It is a really special radio station for a reason.  The people who work there are brilliant professionals and are all very good at their jobs - they (Kris, Holly, Braydon, Shinead, Fuscia) make it so easy for the rest of us on air.  We are pretty much the end result of many others behind us doing all the hard work.  I will always have the highest respect for The Robbies and Carly,  the lovely, solid and sound  Mark Leishman and  my dear friend and mentor Kerry Smith who took me under her wing many years ago when I was new in radio. I wish her all the best and care very deeply for what she is going through at this time.  Much love also to my friends and colleagues in Christchurch who have had a cruel and challenging journey that is still going.  It must be so hard to deliver great radio every day, especially to so many who's lives have been affected so greatly.  Thanks also to the rest of the Breeze teams throughout the country.

And the final word to my brilliant, classy boss Ian Avery who gave me the chance five years ago to have what every working mother dreams of - the chance to be a full time Mum, yet to have a rewarding wonderful career as well.  I have been so very lucky Avo and will always be grateful for that.

You're Awesome Tom

Ah Tom Petty - you're such an awesome dude.
It was Elvis Presley who first set you on your way, all the way from Gainesville, Florida - a not very rock n roll town. And then the Beatles became your true inspiration. What it must have been like all those years later playing with your hero George Harrison in the Travelling Wilbury's. And in 1976 it all happened for you - conquering Britain then America with the awesomeness that is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. 60 Million albums later and you're still cool.

Lanky, sweaty hair, that bony nose and just so much swagger in your skinny jeans. No wonder college students loved you. You're the best.

Katherine Mansfield

My favourite NZ writer

Why so serious Katherine?  You had a wild, wild life.
Especially when you left middle class Wellington for your boho life in London and found your notoriety writing short stories that became famous.  Kicking about with the literary darlings of the day T.S Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Bertrand Russell, D.H Lawrence - what fun!  Disgracing your family, marrying, divorcing, annulling, shacking up with then loving both Middleton Murray (your husband)  and Ida Baker (your wife) at the same time!  How fabulous. I always picture you with your chic bob and long cigarette holder, holding court with and keeping up with the Bloomsbury lot.

I love her.  She just had a particular delicate, delightful way with words.  My all time favourite short story of hers is Sun and Moon - I read it often and just adore the relationship between the brother and sister and what they observe, as only children can,  as their indulgent parents prepare for a party.

Oh! Oh! Oh! It was a little house. It was a little pink house with white snow on the roof
and green windows and a brown door and stuck in the
When Sun saw the nut he felt quite tired and had to lean against Cook.
"Let me touch it. Just let me put my finger on the roof," said Moon, dancing. She always
wanted to touch all the food. Sun didn't.

When I went to Menton, I stood outside the Villa Isola Bella and cried.   There are two plaques hanging on the wall outside the little stone house; I peered through the bougainvillea which clung to the gate and wiped away some tears as I read...

Vous trouverez Isola Bella gravée sur mon coeur.'
"you will find Isola Bella engraved on my heart'
something she wrote to her beloved Tig in a letter in 1920

and this one
"Oeuvres de Katherine Mansfield écrites a Isola Bella - 'The Daughters of the Late Colonel', 'The Young Girl', 'The Stranger', 'The Lady's Maid Poison'."

which refers to the prolific writing period she had there and some of the stories she produced.

Happy NZ Book Month!

Back to you Charlie

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Charlie Sheen is still very much in control.

This 'winning' cooking spot will prove it!

Charlie and his script writers are obviously still working well together.

Horror and Fascination

Did you watch this with absolute horror mixed with an eerie fascination?

Witnessing live footage of this extraordinary event was, to me, equal to watching the Twin Towers fall.

I could not drag myself away and found myself endlessing flipping between Fox, CNN and BBC - knowing full well the magnitude and absolute destruction was something I am unlikely to ever see again.

You know you should look away, but you cannot for the life of you because you don't want to miss it either.
